  37. ### Introduction
  38. `nnn` is a fork of [noice](http://git.2f30.org/noice/), a blazing-fast lightweight terminal file browser with easy keyboard shortcuts for navigation, opening files and running tasks. noice is developed considering terminal based systems. There is no config file and mime associations are hard-coded. However, the incredible user-friendliness and speed make it a perfect utility on modern distros.
  39. `nnn` invokes the desktop opener at runtime, adds new navigation options, [navigate-as-you-type](#navigate-as-you-type-mode) mode, enhanced DE integration, a disk usage analyzer mode, comprehensive file details and much more. Add to that a huge [performance](#performance) boost. For a detailed comparison, visit [nnn vs. noice](https://github.com/jarun/nnn/wiki/nnn-vs.-noice).
  40. If you want to edit a file in vim with some soothing music in the background while referring to a spec in your GUI PDF viewer, `nnn` got it! All from the same terminal session. Follow the instructions in the [quickstart](#quickstart) section and see how `nnn` simplifies those long desktop sessions...
  41. Have fun with it! PRs are welcome. Check out [#1](https://github.com/jarun/nnn/issues/1).

  91. ### Installation
  92. `nnn` needs libreadline, libncursesw (on Linux or ncurses on OS X) and standard libc.
  93. - Packages are available on
  94. - [AUR](https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/nnn/)
  95. - [Homebrew](http://braumeister.org/formula/nnn)
  96. - [Ubuntu PPA](https://launchpad.net/~twodopeshaggy/+archive/ubuntu/jarun/)
  97. - [Debian](https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=nnn)
  98. - Packages for **Fedora 24** and **CentOS 7** are available with the [latest release](https://github.com/jarun/nnn/releases/latest)
  99. - To cook yourself, download the [latest stable release](https://github.com/jarun/nnn/releases/latest) or clone this repository (*risky*). Then install the dependencies and compile (e.g. on Ubuntu 16.04):
  100. $ sudo apt-get install libncursesw5-dev libreadline6-dev
  101. $ make

  154. #### Filters
  155. Filters support regexes to display only the matched entries in the current directory view. This effectively allows searching through the directory tree for a particular entry. Matching entries are shown instantly (search-as-you-type).
  156. Filters do not stack on top of each other. They are applied anew every time. There are 4 ways to reset a filter: <kbd>^L</kbd>, an empty filter expression, a search with no results or an extra backspace at the filter prompt (like vi).
  157. Examples: If you want to list all matches starting with the filter expression (a common use case), start the expression with a `^` (caret) symbol. To list all MKV files type `\.mkv`.
  158. If `nnn` is invoked as root the default filter will also match hidden files.
  159. #### Navigate-as-you-type mode
  160. In this mode directories are opened in filter mode, allowing continuous navigation. Works best with the **arrow keys**.
  161. #### File type abbreviations
  162. The following abbreviations are used in the detail view:
  163. | Symbol | File Type |
  164. | --- | --- |
  165. | `/` | Directory |
  166. | `*` | Executable |
  167. | <code>&#124;</code> | Fifo |
  168. | `=` | Socket |
  169. | `@` | Symbolic Link |
  170. | `b` | Block Device |
  171. | `c` | Character Device |
  172. #### File handling
  173. - `nnn` uses `xdg-open` on Linux and `open(1)` on OS X as the desktop opener.
  174. - To edit all text files in EDITOR (preferably CLI, fallback vi):
  175. export NNN_USE_EDITOR=1
  176. - To enable the desktop file manager key, set `NNN_DE_FILE_MANAGER`. E.g.:
  177. export NNN_DE_FILE_MANAGER=thunar
  178. export NNN_DE_FILE_MANAGER=nautilus
  179. - [mediainfo](https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo) is required to view media information
  180. #### Help
  181. $ man nnn
  182. To lookup keyboard shortcuts at runtime, press <kbd>?</kbd>.
  183. ### Quickstart
  184. Add the following to your shell's rc file for the best experience:
  185. 1. Always open `nnn` in detail mode:
  186. alias n='nnn -d'
  187. 2. Set a desktop file manager to open directories with (if you need one). E.g.:
  188. export NNN_DE_FILE_MANAGER=thunar
  189. 3. Start `nnn`.
  190. n
  191. ### How to
  192. #### use cd .....
  193. To jump to the nth level parent, with PWD at level 0, use `n + 1` dots. For example, to jump to the 6<th> parent of the current directory, use 7 dots. If the number of dots would take you *beyond* `/` (which isn't possible), you'll be placed at `/`.
  194. #### cd on quit
  195. Pick the appropriate file for your shell from [misc/quitcd](https://github.com/jarun/nnn/tree/master/misc/quitcd) and add the contents to your shell's rc file. You'll need to spawn a new shell for the change to take effect. You should start `nnn` as `n` (or modify the function name to something else).
  196. As you might notice, `nnn` uses the environment variable `NNN_TMPFILE` to write the last visited directory path. You can change it.
  197. #### copy file path to clipboard
  198. `nnn` can pipe the absolute path of the current file to a copier script. For example, you can use `xsel` on Linux or `pbcopy` on OS X.
  199. Sample Linux copier script:
  200. #!/bin/sh
  201. echo -n $1 | xsel --clipboard --input
  202. export `NNN_COPIER`:
  203. export NNN_COPIER="/path/to/copier.sh"
  204. Start `nnn` and use <kbd>^K</kbd> to copy the absolute path (from `/`) of the file under the cursor to clipboard.
  205. #### file copy, move, delete
  206. `nnn` doesn't support file copy, move, delete inherently. However, it simplifies the workflow:
  207. 1. copy the absolute path to a file by invoking the file path copier (<kbd>^K</kbd>)
  208. 2. spawn a shell in the current directory (<kbd>!</kbd>)
  209. 3. while typing the desired command, copy the file path (usually <kbd>^-Shift-V</kbd>)
  210. #### boost chdir prompt
  211. `nnn` uses libreadline for the chdir prompt input. So all the fantastic features of readline (e.g. case insensitive tab completion, history, reverse-i-search) is available to you based on your readline [configuration](https://cnswww.cns.cwru.edu/php/chet/readline/readline.html#SEC9).
  212. #### set idle timeout
  213. The terminal screensaver is disabled by default. To set the wait time in seconds, use environment variable `NNN_IDLE_TIMEOUT`.
  214. ### Why fork?
  215. I chose to fork because:
  216. - one can argue my approach deviates from the goal of the original project - keep the utility `suckless`. In my opinion evolution is the taste of time.
  217. - I would like to have a bit of control on what features are added in the name of desktop integration. A feature-bloat is the last thing in my mind. Check out [nnn design considerations](https://github.com/jarun/nnn/wiki/nnn-design-considerations) for more details.
