  216. Help & settings, file details, media info and archive listing are shown in the PAGER. Please use the PAGER-specific keys in these screens.
  217. #### Filters
  218. Filters support regexes to instantly (search-as-you-type) list the matching entries in the current directory.
  219. There are 3 ways to reset a filter:
  220. - pressing <kbd>^L</kbd> (at the new/rename prompt <kbd>^L</kbd> followed by <kbd>Enter</kbd> discards all changes and exits prompt)
  221. - a search with no matches
  222. - an extra backspace at the filter prompt (like vi)
  223. Common use cases:
  224. - to list all matches starting with the filter expression, start the expression with a `^` (caret) symbol
  225. - type `\.mkv` to list all MKV files
  226. - use `.*` to match any character (_sort of_ fuzzy search)
  227. If `nnn` is invoked as root or the environment variable `NNN_SHOW_HIDDEN` is set the default filter will also match hidden files.
  228. #### Navigate-as-you-type mode
  229. In this mode directories are opened in filter mode, allowing continuous navigation. Works best with the **arrow keys**.
  230. In case of only one match and it's a directory, `nnn` auto selects the directory and enters it in this mode. To disable this behaviour,
  231. export NNN_NO_AUTOSELECT=1
  232. #### File indicators
  233. The following indicators are used in the detail view:
  234. | Indicator | File Type |
  235. |:---:| --- |
  236. | `/` | Directory |
  237. | `*` | Executable |
  238. | <code>&#124;</code> | Fifo |
  239. | `=` | Socket |
  240. | `@` | Symbolic Link |
  241. | `@/` | Symbolic Link to directory |
  242. | `b` | Block Device |
  243. | `c` | Character Device |
  244. #### File handling
  245. | External dependency | Operation |
  246. | --- | --- |
  247. | xdg-open (Linux), open(1) (OS X), cygstart (Cygwin) | desktop opener |
  248. | mediainfo, exiftool | multimedia file details |
  249. | gnome-search-tool, catfish | desktop search utility |
  250. | atool, patool ([integration](#integrate-patool)) | create, list and extract archives |
  251. | vidir from moreutils | batch rename, move, delete dir entries |
  252. | vlock (Linux), bashlock (OS X), lock(1) (BSD) | terminal locker |
  253. | $EDITOR (overridden by $VISUAL, if defined) | edit files (fallback vi) |
  254. | $PAGER | page through files (fallback less) |
  255. | $SHELL | spawn a shell, run script (fallback sh) |
  256. - To edit all text files in EDITOR (preferably CLI, fallback vi):
  257. export NNN_USE_EDITOR=1
  258. - To enable the desktop file manager key, set `NNN_DE_FILE_MANAGER`. E.g.:
  259. export NNN_DE_FILE_MANAGER=thunar
  260. export NNN_DE_FILE_MANAGER=nautilus
  261. #### Help

  272. 6. Press <kbd>?</kbd> for help on keyboard shortcuts anytime.
  273. 7. For additional functionality [setup custom scripts](#run-custom-scripts).
  274. ### How to
  275. #### add bookmarks
  276. Set environment variable `NNN_BMS` as a string of `key:location` pairs (max 10) separated by semicolons (`;`):
  277. export NNN_BMS='doc:~/Documents;u:/home/user/Cam Uploads;D:~/Downloads/'
  278. The bookmark prompt also understands the <kbd>~</kbd> (HOME), <kbd>-</kbd> (last visited directory) and <kbd>&</kbd> (start directory) shortcuts.
  279. #### copy file paths
  280. File paths can be copied to the clipboard or to a specific temporary file (if X is unavailable, for example). When in multi-copy mode, currently copied file paths can be listed by pressing `y`.
  281. ##### to clipboard
  282. `nnn` can pipe the absolute path of the current file or multiple files to a copier script. For example, you can use `xsel` on Linux or `pbcopy` on OS X.
  283. Sample Linux copier script:
  284. #!/bin/sh
  285. # comment the next line to convert newlines to spaces
  286. IFS=
  287. echo -n $1 | xsel --clipboard --input
  288. export `NNN_COPIER`:
  289. export NNN_COPIER="/path/to/copier.sh"
  290. Use <kbd>^K</kbd> to copy the absolute path (from `/`) of the file under the cursor to clipboard.
  291. To copy multiple file paths, switch to the multi-copy mode using <kbd>^Y</kbd>. In this mode you can
  292. - select multiple files one by one by pressing <kbd>^K</kbd> on each entry; or,
  293. - navigate to another file in the same directory to select a range of files.
  294. Pressing <kbd>^Y</kbd> again copies the paths to clipboard and exits the multi-copy mode.
  295. To wrap each file path within single quotes, export `NNN_QUOTE_ON`:
  296. export NNN_QUOTE_ON=1
  297. This is particularly useful if you are planning to copy the whole string to the shell to run a command. Quotes can be toggled at runtime using <kbd>^T</kbd>.
  298. Note that the filename is not escaped. So copying may still fail for filenames having quote(s) in them.
  299. ##### when X is missing
  300. A very common scenario on headless remote servers connected via SSH. As the clipboard is missing, `nnn` copies the path names to the tmp file `DIR/.nnncp`, where `DIR` (by priority) is:
  301. $HOME or,
  302. $TMPDIR or,
  303. /tmp
  304. `nnn` needs to know X is unavailable:
  305. export NNN_NO_X=1
  306. To see the path to the copy file, run `nnn`, press `?` and look up `NNN_NO_X`.
  307. Note: despite the name of the environment variable, this method works even if X is available.
  308. Use <kbd>^Y</kbd> and/or <kbd>^K</kbd> to copy file paths as usual. To use the copied paths from the cmdline, use command substitution. For example, if `DIR` above is `/home/user`:
  309. # bash/zsh
  310. ls -ltr `cat /home/user/.nnncp`
  311. ls -ltr $(cat /home/user/.nnncp)
  312. # fish
  313. ls -ltr (cat /home/user/.nnncp)
  314. An alias may be handy:
  315. alias ncp='cat /home/user/.nnncp'
  316. so you can easily copy, move or delete multiple files together:
  317. # bash/zsh
  318. ls -ltr `ncp`
  319. ls -ltr $(ncp)
  320. cp -rvf `ncp` .
  321. mv `ncp` .
  322. rm `ncp` -rf
  323. # fish
  324. ls -ltr (ncp)
  325. cp -rvf (ncp) .
  326. mv (ncp) .
  327. rm (ncp) -rf
  328. Note that you may want to keep quotes disabled in this case.
  329. #### copy, move, delete files
  330. The `nnn` workflow to copy, move or delete files is:
  331. 1. Copy the absolute paths using <kbd>^Y</kbd> and/or <kbd>^K</kbd>
  332. 2. To copy or move files navigate to the destination directory. You can also fire a new instance of `nnn` in another tab of your terminal emulator and open the destination directory.
  333. 3. Spawn a subshell in the destination directory (<kbd>!</kbd>)
  334. 4. While typing the desired command, copy the file paths (usually <kbd>^-Shift-V</kbd>) from the clipboard. If X is unavailable, refer to [this section](#when-x-is-missing).
  335. In addition, `nnn` integrates with vidir. vidir supports batch file move and delete.
  336. #### cd on quit
  337. To quit `nnn` and switch to the directory last opened follow the instructions below.
  338. Pick the appropriate file for your shell from [`scripts/quitcd`](scripts/quitcd) and add the contents to your shell's rc file. You'll need to spawn a new shell for the change to take effect. You should start `nnn` as `n` (or modify the function name to something else). To change directory on quit press `Q` (it's _capital_) or `^G` while exiting.
  339. As you might notice, `nnn` uses the environment variable `NNN_TMPFILE` to write the last visited directory path. You can change it.
  340. #### run custom scripts
  341. `nnn` can invoke custom scripts with the currently selected file name as argument 1.
  342. Export the path to the custom executable script:
  343. export NNN_SCRIPT=/usr/local/bin/nscript
  344. Press <kbd>R</kbd> to run the script in the current directory.
  345. It's possible to run multiple scripts with `nnn` as long as the scripts are in the same location and share the same prefix. To enable multiple scripts,
  346. export NNN_MULTISCRIPT=1
  347. With the example of `NNN_SCRIPT` above, some more scripts could be:
  348. /usr/local/bin/nscript1
  349. /usr/local/bin/nscript2
  350. /usr/local/bin/nscriptcustom1
  351. /usr/local/bin/nscriptcustom2
  352. and so on...
  353. Type the correct suffix when prompted on pressing the keybind <kbd>R</kbd>. To use the base script (`NNN_SCRIPT`), just press <kbd>Enter</kbd>.
  354. ##### sample scripts
  355. - Open image files in current dir in **sxiv**:
  356. #!/usr/bin/env sh
  357. sxiv -q * >/dev/null 2>&1
  358. - Fuzzy find files in **fzy** and open with xdg-open:
  359. #!/usr/bin/env sh
  360. xdg-open $(find -type f | fzy) >/dev/null 2>&1
  361. #### dual-pane or multi-pane
  362. `nnn` doesn't have a native dual-pane or multi-pane mode. Use it with tmux, GNU Screen, Terminator or Tilix.
  363. #### change dir color
  364. The default color for directories is blue. Option `-c` accepts color codes from 0 to 7 to use a different color:
  365. 0-black, 1-red, 2-green, 3-yellow, 4-blue, 5-magenta, 6-cyan, 7-white
  366. Any other value disables colored directories.
  367. #### use cd .....
  368. To jump to the nth level parent, use `n + 1` dots (the first `.` denotes PWD). For example, to jump to the 6<th> parent of the current directory, use 7 dots. If the number of dots would take you *beyond* `/` (which isn't possible), you'll be placed at `/`.
  369. #### integrate patool
  370. On systems where `atool` is not available but `patool` is, drop two copies of the Python3 script [natool](https://github.com/jarun/nnn/blob/master/scripts/natool) as `atool` and `apack` somewhere in `$PATH`.
  371. #### work faster at rename prompt
  372. The rename prompt supports some bash-like command-line shortcuts - <kbd>^A</kbd>, <kbd>^E</kbd>, <kbd>^U</kbd>. <kbd>^L</kbd> clears the name.
  373. #### set idle timeout
  374. The terminal screensaver is disabled by default. To set the wait time in seconds, use environment variable `NNN_IDLE_TIMEOUT`.
  375. #### show hot plugged drives
  376. Enable volume management in your DE file manager and set removable drives or media to be auto-mounted when inserted. Then visit the usual mount point location (`/mnt` or `/media/user`) in `nnn`.
  377. #### tmux config
  378. `nnn` might not handle keypresses correctly when used with tmux (see issue #104 for more details). Set `TERM=xterm-256color` to address it.
  379. ### Why fork?
  380. `nnn` was initially forked from [noice](http://git.2f30.org/noice/) but is significantly [different](https://github.com/jarun/nnn/wiki/nnn-vs.-noice) today. I chose to fork because:
  381. - one can argue my approach deviates from the goal of the original project - keep the utility `suckless`. In my opinion evolution is the taste of time.
  382. - I would like to have a bit of control on what features are added in the name of desktop integration. A feature-bloat is the last thing in my mind. Check out [nnn design considerations](https://github.com/jarun/nnn/wiki/nnn-design-considerations) for more details.
